Off-the-Beaten-Path Amalfi

A 2,000 Year-Old Wine Varietal

Restaurant-Positano

The Italian region of Campania has an ancient and celebrated wine history dating back 2,000 years. Unfortunately the ancient varietals disappeared, until their revival in the mid-20th century. Today, classical grape varieties such as Aglianico, Piedirosso, Greco and Fiano are back from the brink of extinction.

Taurasi, made from the Aglianico grape is a complex, full-bodied, intense and persistent deep ruby red wine with aromas of violets, black currant, blackberry, strawberry, black cherry, vanilla and chocolate. The taste is warm, enveloping, and soft, with aromas of plum, bitter cherry, raspberry, strawberry jam and spices. Ankit loves it!

Make Paper Using Medieval Techniques

Paper-Museum-Amalfi-Italy-Beautiful-Sheet

Known for it’s special “charta bambagina” paper, Amalfi was a major producer since the 10th century. “Charta Bambagina” is thick, soft and elegant, and is still appreciated by artists today.

“Bambagina’ was made from cotton rags that were pounded into pulp. A thin layer of pulp was spread across a wire mesh frame. Excess water was drained off. The sheet was then hung to dry. Amalfi saw the demand for paper increase once public institutions started requiring record-keeping. The height of production was reached in the 18th century when Amalfi had 14 paper mills.

Today this famous paper is made only at Museo Della Carta in Amalfi located in a 13th century paper mill, the oldest in Europe. Make your own paper to take home.

Taste Fermented Tomatoes

Zuppa-di-Pesce

Conca dei Marini is famous for its “Pomodorini a Piennolo.” These juicy grape tomatoes are tied into bunches when they are picked and stored for a year. The Amalfi Coast’s sea air, rich in iodine, Mount Vesuvius’ acidic soils, and the fermentation, give the tomatoes a distinctive taste and make them an essential ingredient in the town’s legendary “Zuppa di Pesce.”
