About Us

Where is our Heart?

Ankit-Agarwal-and-Alpa-Agarwal-TravelMyHeart

We, Alpa Agarwal and Ankit Agarwal, siblings, founded TravelMyHeartTM to help small travel businesses succeed.

Three factors drove our decision to found TravelMyHeart: (1) We love to travel for its joy; the joy of exploration, the joy of serendipity, and the joy of people, different, yet so much like us. Travel makes life worth living. (2) We love software development for its creativity. (3) We love working with small businesses around the world. With growing wealth inequalities, these brave and passionate entrepreneurs make their communities better and are the engines of economic growth. Investing in them is investing in the future of our world.

As George Bernard Shaw wrote, “This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no ‘brief candle’ for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”

We, Ankit and Alpa, invite you to come join us in our mission. Come join us in creating moments of joy that travelers can string together into a sparkling memoir of a life well-lived. Come join us in fostering economic development and reducing wealth inequalities through tourism dollars. Come join us, in making a difference.

Making Travel a Regular Habit

A Sparkling Memoir of a Life Well-Lived

In our rushed lives, science proves that making travel a regular habit is a key to good mental and physical health.

Whether it is waking up on a Sunday morning and visiting a nearby farm or getting away on the weekend for play in the water along a nearby river, or whether it is getting away for a week to kayak amidst whales in the Sea of Cortez, or watch lion cubs cuddle with their moms in Serengeti National Park, the world offers a glass-full of happy moments filled with awe and wonder.

Science shows that experiencing awe and wonder is key to improving our mood and happiness, lowering stress and cellular inflammation, and interestingly, key to kinship. Awe causes the release of oxytocin, the bonding hormone, which makes us feel warm, close, and connected with others. Awe humbles us and makes us appreciate our inter-dependence and makes us kinder and more patient. Awe makes us generous and altruistic. So, should we take out time regularly to get out and experience the magic of the world? Science says, yes.

Science also suggests that novel experiences enhance happiness; that variety is truly the spice of life. In a 2020 research study by Catherine A. Hartley et al., it was found that exposure to diverse experiences, particularly in our physical environments, was strongly associated with positive feelings, making travel key to happiness. In a separate study of the brain by Nico Bunzeck and Emrah Duzel, it was found that fresh experiences resulted in a rush of dopamine, making us happy. Novel experiences are also predictors of longevity. People who seek out new experiences throughout life are happier and healthier. Another research study by Thomas Gilovich, Matthew Killingsworth, and Amit Kumar even showed that spending money on experiences provides more enduring happiness than does spending money on material purchases. Gilovich et al’s conclusion is reinforced by research conducted by Dr. Elizabeth Dunn et al. at the University of British Columbia and Professor Ryan Howell et al. at San Francisco State University. They found that material purchases lead to temporary happiness, but the memories of experiences linger on forever. So should you go on a guided rafting trip on the Zambezi River in Africa, or on an expedition to the Danger Islands to see a supercolony of 1.5 million penguins, or on a new hike in your neighborhood? Science says, yes. And TravelMyHeart can help you find novel things to see and do close to you or a flight away.

Science also proves that nostalgia and memories of experiences, increase happiness. Research conducted by Dr. Constantine Sedikides et al. found that memories result in feelings of self-continuity and connectedness with our past and with our personalities and identities. They also provide a feeling of vitality, energy, and spiritedness. Co-author Erica Hepper explains eloquently, “When we experience nostalgia, we tend to feel happier, have higher self-esteem, feel closer to loved ones, and feel that life has more meaning. And on a physical level, nostalgia literally makes us feel warmer.” Hepper and her colleagues also showed that nostalgia produces increased optimism about the future. On similar lines, research conducted by Professor Clay Routledge et al. found that nostalgia helps people make greater meaning of their present lives by relating it to their past experiences. The result can boost mood and reduce stress.

Hans Christian Andersen says it best:

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float,

To gain all while you give,

To roam the roads of lands remote,

To travel is to live.”

We built TravelMyHeart to make it fast and fun for you to enjoy the magic of the world; to find things to see and do quickly and easily within driving distance or a flight away; to book tours and activities directly at commission-free, prices; and to save your travel ideas to an itinerary and automatically convert them into a scrapbook of memories – so you can look back on a life well lived.
